Relocation for Residents of Peel’s Retreat
The developers of Peel’s Retreat, a 157 lot development located adjacent to a reserve area above Peel Estuary, have taken special care to ensure that the fauna and flora in the development have been preserved or relocated.
Peel’s Retreat is a joint venture project between Perth based developers Heath Development Company, Markham Development Group and Estates Development Company. The developers have been working closely with the City of Mandurah and their nominated local Fauna Relocator, Allison Dixon, during the planning of one of Dawesville’s newest land developments in Wilderness Drive, off the Old Coast Road.
Ms Dixon from Novara, was on site for up to three months, and used a variety of observation and capture techniques including trapping, netting and manual pick ups.
Some of the species that were captured and released into alternative suitable locations were: 10 Quendas 11 Brushtail Possums 2 Tawny Frog Mouth Owls Numerous types of reptiles including skinks, lizards, snakes and bobtails.
Two venomous western brown snakes were also amongst Ms Dixon’s finds.
The possums and quendas were relocated to the Julimar National Park in Chittering with the assistance of the Department of Environment who weighed, tagged, health checked, and DNA sampled the mammals.
Prior to construction, the joint venture partners provided access to the Fremantle Wood School to retrieve any suitable timber on site. Additionally the grass trees within Peel’s Retreat were made available to the City of Mandurah.
Initial clearing of the site has been done in three stages to ensure selective trees and under-storey could be retained. All healthy trees were surveyed and clearly marked for protection in this process.
Construction has recently commenced on the 46 lots in Stage 1 of Peel’s Retreat and will be available from October 2008. These lots range in size from 591 to 951 square meters and are expected to be priced between $200,000 and $350,000.
The developers have previously undertaken a number of successful land developments in the Dawesville area including Dawesville Ridge, Aqua Vista and Bouvard Wood.
